Sustainability and delicious taste have a long tradition at Griesson - de Beukelaer (GdB): As part of the sustainability brochure, the family-owned company publishes the developments in sustainability management for the year 2023 and has achieved significant reductions in CO2 emissions: -37% in direct greenhouse gas emissions from its own business activities, recorded in Scope 1 and 2, and -17% in Scope 3, the indirect greenhouse gas emissions in the value chain. In line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), GdB has committed to signifi-cantly reducing company-wide greenhouse gas emissions with short-term targets: in the period 2020-2030 the family-owned company aims to reduce CO2 emissions in Scope 1 and 2 by 42 percent. GdB's reduction target for Scope 3 is 25 percent.
Cereola with ChoViva is an example of how innovations can contribute to reducing CO2 emissions: In collaboration with the Munich-based start-up Planet A Foods, GdB has launched an innovation on the cookie market in 2023. In a novel manufacturing process, a cocoa-free chocolate alternative is created from oats and sunflower seeds, which round off the Cereola cookies with fine roasted aromas to create a delicious taste experience. By avoiding cocoa and dairy products, the CO2 footprint of Cereola with ChoViva is reduced by 25 percent compared to Cereola Der Klassiker with milk chocolate. This calculation includes all emissions generated over the entire product life cycle from ingredients, packaging, production and delivery through to disposal.
“We regard sustainability as a green thread that harmoniously combines tradition and the future for us as a large family under one roof. As a family, we think long-term and take responsibility – for the people who trust us and the nature that surrounds us,” explains Dany Schmidt, Chairman of the Management Board. “Our strength lies in the family, because we think and act in such a way that the consequences of our actions are not at the expense of future generations.”
Sustainable corporate governance
In 2023, the EcoVadis rating confirmed the company’s sustainable management and once again awarded Griesson - de Beukelaer the gold medal.
